Technology is advancing at an incredible rate. Every few years, a new product comes along that completely changes the game. The iPhone revolutionized smartphones. The Amazon Echo made voice assistants mainstream. Now, a new company called Rabbit has developed an AI assistant that truly shocked me with what it can do.

With lots of AI and tech companies making big claims these days. I didn't think much of the Rabbit reveal  until I saw the demo which absolutely blew me away. Their new device, the Rabbit R1, can do things I didn’t think were possible yet with consumer technology.

To understand what is Rabbit R1 we are going to write the article in the reveal video format.

Current Tech Devices

While my phone is a reliable device, it's undeniable that it hasn't seen substantial changes in years. The app-based operating system feels the same , requiring me to navigate through various apps, menus, and screens, making the user experience less intuitive.

Though AI assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant handle basic tasks, they often struggle with contextual understanding and executing more complex requests. The introduction of AI tools like chatGPT has marked some notable changes over the years.

However, considering a different perspective, Rabbit aims to redefine the concept of a phone, challenging the conventional approach to technology.

Meet the Rabbit R1

Rabbit aimed to develop an AI assistant that comprehends natural language requests and guides users through tasks seamlessly. They introduced a groundbreaking AI framework, the Large Action Model (LAM), to power the device OS.

LAM enables the Rabbit R1 to analyze visual interfaces and replicate human actions, allowing it to perform tasks such as booking flights, ordering food, creating calendar events, and controlling smart home devices. The R1 impressively handled complex, multi-step tasks during their demo.

The hardware is elegantly designed to fit in the palm of your hand. It features a touchscreen, camera, and a unique rotary wheel for scrolling through results. Additionally, there's a push-to-talk button that instantly wakes up the device, eliminating the need for a wake word.

However, the true magic lies in the software and AI capabilities under the hood."

Simply Ask, and It Handles the Rest Naturally

In their demonstration, Rabbit's CEO tasked the R1 with planning a complete family trip to London. Within moments, the assistant compiled flight options, suggested hotels, planned activities, and offered to handle all the bookings. The CEO didn't need to open any apps, fill out forms, or click any buttons.

I was astonished at how the R1 effortlessly understood the natural language request and managed the entire planning and execution process. This surpasses the capabilities of Siri or Alexa by lightyears.

The R1 is also adept at assisting with daily tasks such as ordering food, booking rides, or controlling smart home devices. No need for specific apps simply express your desires in plain English, and the large action model takes care of interacting with apps and services on your behalf.

Computer Vision Unleashes Innovative Capabilities

The R1 introduces a revolutionary feature, Rabbit Eye, an integrated computer vision system. Using the camera, this device can actively perceive and comprehend objects and text in the real world.

In their demonstration, the presenter displayed a printed table of job candidates and requested the R1 to add a new column with specific matched criteria. Within seconds, the device analyzed the table and sent an updated version via email.

This form of visual intelligence, combined with the LAM framework, enables truly remarkable applications. It's the kind of innovation one would anticipate seeing in the future, not in a current Ksh 32,000 consumer device.

Spontaneously Introduce New Skills

One of the most astonishing capabilities demonstrated by Rabbit is referred to as Teach Mode. This feature enables users to effortlessly impart new skills to the R1 by simply showcasing them.

In the presentation, the speaker demonstrated the process of generating an image prompt on the MidJourney AI art platform, explaining each step. This tutorial was then transmitted to the R1. Subsequently, the presenter seamlessly instructed the assistant to generate new images using MidJourney — all without the need for additional programming.

Teach Mode is a groundbreaking feature, transforming the R1 into a platform that can be customized by anyone, regardless of technical expertise. The potential applications of this feature are boundless.

Takeaways

The Rabbit R1 signals the rapid maturation of true AI assistants. With features like natural language UI, computer vision, and large language models, it transforms consumer tech into intelligent agents. This shift means technology serves humans more effectively. Anticipating its release later this year, the Rabbit R1 offers a glimpse into the future of everyday technology. Priced at just Ksh32000, it promises accessible enjoyment of advanced AI capabilities well before they become mainstream.

Biggest challenge for Rabbit.

Rabbit R1 faces intense competition from tech giants like Google and Apple. While startups like Rabbit offer agility, giants have vast resources. The concern isn't low sales but the potential launch of a free, comparable agent by a tech giant. Rabbit's uniqueness lies in proprietary data for a specific user experience. Convincing users to adopt a second device when their primary one suffices remains a challenge. Preorders are rising, but the device's long-term success is uncertain, reflecting the dynamic landscape of AI innovation.
