Apps and websites for Techies.

MyTechCult.

Must use apps and websites for techies.

1. Discord

I wish I had known about Discord early when I was starting in tech. Without a doubt, it has become my ultimate platform for learning all things tech-related. Why do I give it a 5-star? stay tuned.

What is Discord?

Discord is a free communications app that lets you share voice, video, and text chat with friends, game communities, and developers. It has hundreds of millions of users, making it one of the most popular ways to connect with people online. Discord can be used on almost every popular platform and device, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and via web browsers.

What is Discord for?

To communicate! Anyone can create a Discord server( a group ) for free for any number of reasons. You can use it to gather friends together in a group text or voice chat just generally. Use it to post gifs, share memes and screenshots, or talk about your day.

But in TechKona we talk about tech, then how is discord related to tech?

Programmers and other techies have created servers to help others in their related fields.

For example, let's take a programming language called React ® The diehards of the language have created a discord server. Here beginners and even pros can ask questions and get answers in a matter of minutes. Also one can showcase their project or even organize an event on the platform. Also since the creators and the managers of such languages are in the platform any updates and improvements can be announced on their server.

The thing I love about Discord is that you are anonymous so you can talk to anyone in the world. For example, if Linus Torvalds is in a Linux discord server He can answer your question. Imagine how cool that is.

2. Reddit

The thing to know about Reddit is that it has everything from memes to fashion to tech so for you to learn tech in it you have to join the tech subreddits. Like Arduino.

What is Reddit?

Reddit is a social network with a forum-style discussion structure. Users create posts in topic-based communities — called subreddits — and interact in comment threads. Every thread has an OP (original poster) who started it. Users can also vote content by others “up” or “down” the algorithm.

Redditors use the platform in many ways, but common ones are:

  • To ask for help with a specific problem, such as tech tutorials (or big life crises)

  • Subscribing to subreddits to stay informed about their favorite topics

  • Connecting with others who share their interests

  • To learn something new (check out r/IWantToLearn)

  • For entertainment via memes, humor subreddits, or to discuss TV or movies

  • What is a subreddit?

Subreddits serve as mini-communities within the site — like Facebook Groups, but public — and foster user interaction around common interests. Subreddits have their URL, for example Kenya subreddit

Why do I love Reddit?

In Reddit, the Redditors have the power, unlike example Twitter where the company can choose what to trend and what not to. Since it is made up of subreddits managed by some users the company has no much power over the users. This was seen last month when the company wanted to change its policies. The biggest subreddits struck which led to the Reddit die for 2 days.

3. Twitter

If you wanna learn tech and at the same time be entertained, Twitter is your go-to platform. One thing to know about Twitter is that you have to choose who to follow since your content is based mostly on this. Your Twitter can easily be filled with violence or explicit content as easily as it can be full of technology and informative content.

How does Twitter work?

Twitter is a social media platform where users can post short messages called tweets. You can follow other users to see their tweets on your timeline, interact with tweets through replies, retweets, and likes, and explore trending topics through hashtags and the Explore tab.

One of the best things about Twitter is that is where the news first breaks.

.

4. Linkedin

One of the most helpful platforms for linking employees and employers, students and future employers, company partners, friends, and people in general.

It's also like a bragging platform where you can brag without feeling awful about it. You can brag about everything from your new job, graduating with first-class honors, and your new project. Just everything. Like this guy😂😂.

 How does it work?

LinkedIn is a professional networking platform that allows users to create profiles, connect with colleagues and professionals, and showcase their work experience, skills, and achievements. It is primarily used for professional networking, job searching, and sharing industry-related content. Users can join groups, follow companies, and engage in discussions to expand their professional network and opportunities.

Why should you join Linked In?

Chances are that you will not be noticed on LinkedIn but you can get contacts of people and corporations that will help land a job, internship, or even attachment. Also, you can always get job advertisements from companies. You can also make friends on the platform.

5.GitHub

I know you think that GitHub is for pro-coders Guys who code for like the 7hrs a day like me😂😂. But that is not the case if you can write Hello World you have to share it in GitHub. Like this guy.

What is GitHub and How does it work?

GitHub is a web-based platform that uses the Git version control system to enable developers to collaborate on software projects. Developers create repositories to store and manage project files, track changes with commits, and utilize branches for independent work. Collaboration is facilitated through pull requests, allowing developers to propose and review changes. GitHub also provides tools for issue tracking, project management, code reviews, and discussions, enhancing teamwork and code quality. Additionally, GitHub acts as a hosting platform, making it easy to share and deploy projects online.

Why should you use GitHub?

You see When you are looking for a job the company or person who will employ you needs to be sure you have skills so they are probably going to ask to see your GitHub account.

6. Medium

Let’s say you want to read a blog about how a tech guy like you can get a girlfriend medium is where to get it. Here you can read about everything and also you can write about everything and get paid.

How does medium work?

Medium is an online publishing platform where users can create, share, and discover written content on a wide range of topics. Writers can sign up and publish articles directly on Medium, leveraging its intuitive editor and formatting options. Readers can explore the platform to discover articles based on their interests, follow specific publications or writers, and engage with content through comments, highlighting, and sharing.
